Invisible Boys is an emotional tale of identity, sexuality and suicide derived from personal experience about three teenage boys who struggle to come to terms with their homosexuality in a small Western Australian town.

In a small town, everyone thinks they know you: Charlie is a hardcore rocker, who’s not as tough as he looks. Hammer is a footy jock with big AFL dreams, and an even bigger ego.

Zeke is a shy over-achiever, never macho enough for his family. But all three boys hide who they really are. When the truth is revealed, will it set them free or blow them apart?

Invisible Boys is a raw, confronting YA novel that explores the complexities and trauma of rural gay identity with painful honesty, devastating consequences and ultimately, hope.

Holden Sheppard is an award-winning author born and bred in Geraldton, Western Australia. His debut novel, Invisible Boys, was published in 2019 and has since gone on to publish a second YA novel, The Brink.

Holden has had writing appear in books including Growing Up in Australia (2022), Hometown Haunts (2021) and Bright Lights, No City (2019). An ambassador for Lifeline WA, Holden served as Deputy Chair of Writing WA from 2019 – 2023.


Adapted from the award-winning novel by Holden Sheppard, the powerful 10-part Stan Original Series Invisible Boys will premiere on Thursday 13 February 2025..

Filmed in Perth and Geraldton, Invisible Boys is an emotional tale of individuality and belonging. Set against the backdrop of the 2017 same-sex marriage plebiscite, the series is raw and authentic, depicting facets of gay sexuality that is often overlooked.

Created for television, written, and directed by Logie and AACTA award-winner Nicholas Verso (Crazy Fun Park, Boys in the Trees), Invisible Boys showcases emerging Australian talent Joseph Zada (East of Eden), Aydan Calafiore (The Voice 2018), Zach Blampied (New Gold Mountain) and Joe Klocek (Territory), alongside Pia Miranda (Windcatcher) and David Lyons (Truth Be Told).

The impressive writing team includes Enoch Mailangi, Walkley Award-winning writer Allan Clarke, award-winning author of the book Invisible Boys Holden Sheppard, and Artistic Director of Griffin Theatre, Declan Greene.
