Watch-This-Johanna-Allen-Vidya-Makan-Jacob-Rozario-and-Nick-Simpson-DeeksStep into the dazzling world of Stephen Sondheim with Colour & Light: The Art of Stephen Sondheim – a spellbinding new revue from Australia’s highly acclaimed and multi-award winning Sondheim repertory company, Watch This, presented by Theatre Works.

After 10 acclaimed productions, Watch This (recipient of twenty-nine Green Room Award nominations and five-time winner) invites you on a journey through the genius of one of musical theatre’s greatest storytellers.

“Sondheim’s music and lyrics are a gift to any actor, director or storyteller. I am thrilled to be immersing myself in his work and excited to showcase his songs (especially the rarely performed) in a new light, proving how universal his writing is,” says Co-Director, Dean Drieberg.

“I’m really looking forward to the chance to explore Sondheim’s work in a way that feels personal, fresh, and immediate. There’s something incredibly powerful about hearing these songs up close, without all the bells and whistles – just the music, the words, and the stories,” adds Co-Director, Melanie Hillman.

This handpicked collection blends Sondheim’s most cherished songs with lesser-known treasures, celebrating his unmatched ability to capture the complexities of the human experience. From moments of heartbreak to bursts of hilarity, each piece reveals the wit, depth, and emotional resonance that define Sondheim’s work.

“It’s such a joy to revisit this material with a cast who really understands the emotional depth and complexity of Sondheim’s work,” says Hillman.

Alongside Music Director and Featured Artist, Dr Trevor Jones, the all-star cast will include Vidya Makan (Green Room Award and Sydney Theatre Award nominee, Hamilton, Six), Johanna Allen (Green Room Award winner, Sweeney Todd, The Phantom of the Opera), Nick Simpson-Deeks (Green Room Award winner Deadloch, Sunday In The Park With George), and Jacob Rozario (Dear Evan Hansen, & Juliet).

Presented through Watch This’ innovative and distinctly Australian lens, this production offers a fresh perspective on Sondheim’s artistry, breathing new life into his extraordinary repertoire.

“We’ve assembled a stellar cast of some of the country’s most versatile and celebrated singer/actors who will bring depth and sparkle to this catalogue of Sondheim material,” says Drieberg.

Performed in an intimate setting, Colour & Light invites audiences to connect deeply with the music, lyrics, and stories that have captivated generations. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or new to his work, this brand-new revue promises an unforgettable evening of theatrical magic explored through familiar pieces and hidden gems.
