The City of Melbourne is on the lookout for young creatives with fresh ideas to take part in the 2021 Signal Young Creatives Lab – an opportunity for young artists and creatives to realise their project dreams in collaboration with the dedicated team at Signal.
New ideas and project proposals are being sought from those 18 to 25 years old across all artistic disciplines as well inter-disciplinary artists such as curators, producers, performers, designers, film-makers, gamers, new media artists and writers.
Proposals can include anything from exhibitions and installations to performances, conversation series, publications, workshops, digital projects or sound and screen works.
Successful Young Creatives Lab applicants will be given access to the Signal studio to create their project, which includes access to rehearsal spaces, a computer lab, outdoor plaza, screens and soundwalk. They will also have access to one-on-one sessions with a dedicated mentor, producing and marketing support and technical and production support.
Former Young Creatives Lab participants, writer and director Abbie Pobjoy and producer Bonny Scott, encouraged all young artists to apply for funding through Signal. “The Young Creatives Lab supports all different types of art-forms. So if you think you have something to say and make, make sure to apply,” said Abbie.
“No idea is too big or small for the Young Creatives Lab team,” said Bonny. “They truly believe in giving young people a leg up in the arts industry and give fantastic mentoring opportunities along the way. I would encourage anyone to give it a go.”
Projects for 2021 Signal Young Creatives Lab will be assessed on:
- Innovation and point of difference,
- Is the idea clearly expressed and achievable,
- The impact of participation in the Young Creatives Lab on the applicants professional development,
- How the idea / proposal engages with the Signal venue and program.
The Signal Young Creatives Lab program encourages local and regional artists to apply. Artists from outside Melbourne can include travel, accommodation and living expenses in their budget submissions.
The initial application process is simple – applicants are asked to submit their idea, complete a budget proposal outlining creative personnel, production costs and materials required. Signal will assess projects with a budget between $5,000 and $8,000.
Expressions of Interest for the 2021 Signal Young Creatives Lab are now open and close on Friday 26 March 2021. For more information, or to submit an application, visit: www.melbourne.vic.gov.au for details.
