Jonathan Tolins’ controversial comedy drama has never seen the light of day in Australia – until now. Firerock Productions presents the Australian premiere of The Last Sunday in June at Chapel Off Chapel from 29 October – 8 November 2025.
It’s Pride month in New York City – but upstairs, in a cosy apartment with the best parade views in town, things are about to get a whole lot more complicated.
What begins as a casual get-together between friends quickly unravels into an unflinching exploration of love, identity, friendship, and the compromises we make along the way. It’s funny, flirty, devastating and just a little too real, eventually asking the big question: “What does pride really mean when the parade ends?”
Directed by Cal Robinson-Taylor (Holding the Man, Torch Song), this razor-sharp, queer cult classic serves up hilarious one-liners, whip-smart banter and heart-punch honesty in equal measure. Part sitcom, part soul-search – it’s the night in with friends you’ll never forget. Think Will & Grace… with sharper claws.
“When The Last Sunday in June first opened more than twenty years ago, it captured a community at a turning point. It looked back on decades of struggle and forward to a hopeful but uncertain future,” says director Cal Robinson-Taylor.
“Coming back to the play now, it feels like holding a mirror up to both the past and present. It’s a reminder of how far we’ve come, and how questions about identity, belonging and authenticity still shape who we are today.”
