Sweet Charity (review)

The Cast of Sweet CharitySixty years after its Broadway debut, Sweet Charity remains one of musical theatre’s most endearing celebrations of optimism in the face of disappointment.

Adapted from Federico Fellini’s 1957 film Nights of Cabiria, the musical united the talents of playwright Neil Simon, composer Cy Coleman and lyricist Dorothy Fields, with legendary director-choreographer Bob Fosse shaping its distinctive style.

In this bold and thoughtfully reimagined production from Heirlume Productions in association with Forest Collective, the beloved classic finds renewed relevance through a distinctly queer lens, revealing fresh emotional depths while preserving the warmth, humour and irresistible charm that have sustained it for generations.

Directed with confidence and clarity by Madison Lee, this production relocates Charity Hope Valentine’s journey to a world poised between the Lavender Scare and the Stonewall Riots.

Heirlume Productions Erica Wild as CharityRather than feeling imposed upon the material, the concept sits comfortably within Neil Simon’s witty book and the timeless score by Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields, illuminating themes of identity, belonging and self-acceptance that have always lingered beneath the surface.

At the centre of the production is a captivating performance from Erica Wild as Charity. Bursting with enthusiasm, vulnerability and unwavering hope, Wild beautifully captures the character’s determination to keep believing in love despite repeated setbacks.

Wild’s Charity is instantly likeable, drawing the audience into every triumph and heartbreak with effortless sincerity. Vocally assured and emotionally engaging, she anchors the production with remarkable warmth.

Opposite Wild, Clancy Enchelmaier delivers strong work in the dual roles of Vittorio and Oscar, bringing distinct characterisation to each. The chemistry between Wild and Enchelmaier develops naturally throughout the show, lending genuine emotional weight to the production’s central encounters.

Heirlume Productions Sweet Charity Clancy EnchelmaierMadeline Pratt and Hannah Gutierrez Cañon shine as Nickie and Helene, proving both excellent comic foils and loyal companions to Charity. Their scenes together sparkle with wit and camaraderie, while Sarahlouise Younger brings commanding presence and plenty of personality to her multiple roles, including Herman and Daddy.

The supporting ensemble contributes enormously to the show’s success. Lisa-Marie Coad, Bridie Erwin-Keirl, Eden Holmes, Alessandra Negro and Tyler Rose Shattock each create memorable character moments while seamlessly navigating a variety of roles throughout the production.

Musically, the production is in excellent hands. Musical directors Evan J Lawson and Max Kielly ensure Coleman’s sophisticated score is delivered with energy and precision, allowing beloved numbers such as Big SpenderIf My Friends Could See Me Now and The Rhythm of Life to retain their iconic appeal while serving the production’s contemporary perspective.

Jesse Matthews’ choreography embraces both the style and spirit of the era while maintaining a fresh sense of theatricality. The movement work feels authentic to the period without becoming merely nostalgic, contributing significantly to the production’s dynamic visual storytelling.

Heirlume Productions Sweet Charity Sarahlouise YoungerSpecial mention must also go to Zachary Dixon’s costume design. Meticulously detailed and beautifully realised, the costumes immediately establish the production’s 1960s setting. From the silhouettes to the colour palette, every garment helps immerse the audience in the world of the show while supporting the individual personalities of the characters.

What ultimately sets this production apart is its thoughtful reframing of familiar material. By situating Charity’s story within a specifically queer historical context, especially during international Pride month, Lee and her creative team bring new perspective to the musical’s themes without overshadowing the qualities that have made it endure for six decades.

Funny, heartfelt and thoughtfully staged, this Sweet Charity proves that even after six decades, Charity Hope Valentine’s search for connection and acceptance remains as compelling as ever.
