God’s Cowboy

God's Cowboy Nathaniel Savy and Max FernandezThis summer and just in time for Sydney Mardi Gras, a bold new Australian play bucks convention and rides straight into the spotlight.

God’s Cowboy, a powerful, provocative and outrageously funny work by legendary Sydney theatre figure Les Solomon, makes its full season world premiere at Flight Path Theatre from 21 January to 21 February 2026.

Raw, fearless and warm-hearted, God’s Cowboy is a backstage triangular love story with a dangerous edge. At its centre is a self-styled “cowboy” – flamboyant, charismatic and deeply guarded – a man whose showy bravado masks buried pain and long-held secrets.

The story unfolds through the eyes of twin siblings, a brother and sister who partially narrate the action in flashback. They revisit a season in a play and their tangled, emotionally charged relationship with their co-star: the cowboy of the title. What begins as playful and seductive soon reveals darker undercurrents, as truths surface and loyalties fracture.

“There are myriad surprises and secrets revealed,” says Solomon. “It’s bravely honest, at times provocative and outrageous. So many young people have their voice in this story. It’s a powder-keg of deep human emotion.”

After acclaimed showcase performances in April 2024 and further development in February 2025, God’s Cowboy now arrives fully realised on the Sydney stage, led by an exciting new creative team and staged in the intimate surrounds of Flight Path Theatre in Marrickville.

The production is directed by Ella Morris and stars Max Fernandez as Daniel, the magnetic and volatile cowboy. After a decade in community theatre, Fernandez has surged into the professional spotlight in 2025, earning acclaim for his comic turn in Frogs: They Sing Show Songs in Hell (New Theatre), a leading role in Bonny and Read (Qtopia’s Loading Dock), cabarets and concerts, and the workshop of the new musical Goblin at Roslyn Packer Theatre.

Co-starring with Max is a dynamic ensemble including Nathaniel Savy (To Be Frank – Sinatra Show) as Peter, Sophia Laurantus as Penny, Tate Wilkinson Alexander (The Bookstore, Call of the Void, Mile) as Demetrious. Joining them is Isaac Niven (Henry VI, all parts) and Amy Goedecke.

Celebrating 30 years as talent agent, producer, director and now playwright, Les Solomon, the septuagenarian powerhouse has produced dozens of successful stage productions, most with LGBTQIA+ themes, and many launching the careers of major ‘names’ in stage and screen like David Campbell, Tim Draxl, Hayden Tee and Carmen Duncan.

Drawing on decades of experience in front of and behind the footlights – backstage and front-of-house – God’s Cowboy is a gutsy, funny and unmissable new Australian play that speaks directly to desire, identity, power and vulnerability.
