Blue Wizard

Belvoir_Blue Wizard_Nick Coyle_APNOriginally commissioned and presented by PACT centre for emerging artists, Belvoir in association with Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras present the gayest one-man show ever, Blue Wizard.

An intergalactic gay wizard gets stranded on earth on the side of a mountain where he casts spells and dances magic dances in an attempt to return to his home comet. Something went very wrong, he was sent to earth to commune with the Ancient Egyptians but his timing was off and he’s arrived 3000 years late.

Nick Coyle is a comic genius. His aim, in his own words, is to make the gayest one-man show ever. Blue Wizard unites cheap spectacle, super-camp theatre magic, song, puppetry, storytelling and highly original costume design – to tell the story of a gay alien who has to learn to live like an ordinary human being.

Coyle is a writer, director and performer who has developed a cult following over the past decade for his work hosting radio shows on FBi, performing in solo shows like Me Pregnant! and Double Tribute, and as one third of Pig Island. His other writing credits include: Rommy (Old Fitz), The October Sapphire (New York International Fringe Festival) and Hammerhead (is dead) (Griffin Stablemates). He has won the SMAC award from FBi Radio twice in the Best Onstage category.

First performed as part of Tiny Stadiums festival of live art and theatre in 2013, Blue Wizard is a brilliant act of subversion dressed up to look like a queer bimbo in an electric blue wig. The result is hilarious, but it is also an oddly moving reflection on the growing sense that time is running out for the world as we know it. If we don’t get our act together soon, well… let’s just say there’ll be no more jizz and diamonds, and what will we ever do then?
