Advocates welcome commitment on foreign same-sex marriages

Same Sex Marriage editorialMarriage equality advocates have welcomed the Victorian Labor Party’s commitment to recognising foreign same-sex marriages.

The ALP says it will amend the state Relationships Act to recognise overseas legal relationships as Victorian registered relationships, joining Tasmania, NSW and Queensland which already recognise foreign civil unions and same-sex marriages.

Australian Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome, said, “We applaud Victorian Labor’s promise to respect the vows of same-sex couples married under foreign laws by giving them legal protection and recognition.”

“This is as much as a state can do regarding foreign same-sex marriages because of provisions in the federal Marriage Act specifically banning the recognition of such marriages.”

“We look forward to the Victorian ALP building on its important initiative by also supporting a state same-sex marriage law.”
