From the moment he strides into the spotlight, Reuben Kaye commands the Athenaeum Theatre stage with a magnetic blend of glamour and razor-edged intelligence. This is cabaret at its best: biting, provocative, and unapologetically political. Kaye is one of the most vital and fearless voices on the Australian stage right now.
Kaye’s new show, Hard to Swallow, doesn’t just flirt with controversy – it devours it whole. With wicked precision, Kaye skewers figures like Donald Trump, Gina Rinehart, and Pauline Hanson, dismantling power structures with a smirk and a perfectly timed high note.
But what elevates this show beyond sharp satire is its heart. Beneath the sequins and savage punchlines lies a deeply personal and urgent exploration of identity, queerness, and survival.
Kaye’s embrace of his Jewish heritage adds further texture, grounding the performance in something real and resonant. He doesn’t just ask who’s to blame for the state of the world, he dares the audience to sit in that discomfort and reckon with it.
Musically, the show soars. The original songs, co-written with the equally talented Shanon D Whitelock, are as precise as they are lyrically incisive, brought to life by a phenomenal six-piece band that pulses with energy. Each number feels like an event in itself: equal parts concert, confessional, and a call to arms.
Kaye’s comedic instincts are unmatched. He dances along the edge of what’s acceptable, then gleefully leaps over it, dragging the audience with him. The result is a room full of laughter that feels both cathartic and conspiratorial.
And by the time the show barrels toward its riotous finale, complete with the crowd loudly chanting “You mother fucker got this bitch!” – you realise you have seen a performance that entertains, challenges, and unites all at once.
Fresh off his appointment as Artistic Director of the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, Kaye is clearly at the height of his powers. Hard to Swallow is bold, brilliant, and utterly unforgettable, a masterclass in modern cabaret that leaves you exhilarated, provoked, and hungry for more.
