ALTAR

Midsumma-2024-ALTAR-Em-Tambree

This summer you are invited to a wedding you’ll never forget! Em Tambree makes their playwriting debut with ALTAR, at the Abbotsford Convent from 7 – 10 February, as part of the 2024 Midsumma Festival.

Sutton’s life, meticulously chosen, is a testament to her aspirations. The white picket fence, a husband, three children; these were the chapters she wrote for herself. But amidst her well-thought-out life plan was something Sutton could never have accounted for… Dana.

Today is Sutton’s wedding day. Dana has been invited but Dan will be in attendance. Dan who was once Dana. The collision of Sutton’s present and Dan’s past self sets the stage for a compelling exploration of closeted relationships, self-discovery, and the intricacies of human connection.

Developed In-Residency with Abbotsford Convent and Midsumma Pathways, ALTAR was inspired by Em Tambree’s lived experience of falling in love for the very first time inside the confines and constraints of an Evangelical Congregation in Regional Queensland.

ALTAR invites you to transcend the boundaries of traditional theatre and immerse yourself in a site-specific performance at the Rosina Courtyard; Peter Rowland’s elegant and charming wedding venue nestled inside the Convent’s grounds.

With direction by Kathryn Yates, ALTAR stars Evie Korver as Sutton and Eddie Pattison as Dan, childhood best friends turned strangers. This strictly limited season is set to be an emotional pilgrimage that will leave you breathless.

Em Tambree (they/them) is an emerging director and producer. Em undertook training in Musical Theatre at CentreStage, SHOWFIT (2016) and the Australian Institute of Music (2019).

Post graduation, Tambree’s exploration of accessibility in the industry led them to develop experience in almost every aspect of stagecraft and theatre-making. Their greatest discovery was their passion for helping their communities to tell their stories.

They proudly identify as queer, gender-diverse, neuro-divergent, and disabled, and believe each intersectionality plays an integral part in their creative practice.
