Nominated for the 2014 Drama Desk Award and 2014 Tony Award for Best New Play, Terrence McNally’s Mothers and Sons plays at the Ensemble Theatre from 25 August 2015.
It’s Christmas time in New York. Acid-tongued Katharine (Anne Tenney) is angry about almost everything. She just lost her husband, and twenty years ago, she lost her son Andre to AIDS. Out of the blue she turns up uninvited at Andre’s lover Cal’s apartment. Cal (Jason Langley) is the closest thing to family she’s got left. But he’s moved on – and now has a husband and a son of his own.
As Katharine spends an evening with Cal, his husband Will (Tim Draxl) and their son Bud (Connor Burke & Thomas Fisher) she sees the full life Andre might have had… if only he’d been born at a different time. Will Katharine seize this second chance for a place to belong? Or will her own prejudices get in the way?
In this heartbreaking, funny, beautiful new play, four time Tony Award winning playwright Terrence McNally shows us how a generation of lost men still haunts the ones they left behind. Strikingly timely, and deeply compassionate, Mothers and Sons is about the evolving definition of family and the healing power of forgiveness.
“Terrence McNally is a probing and enduring dramatist. A resonant elegy for a ravaged generation.” – New York Times
