To provide space after the Referendum, GiveOUT Day has been moved by one week to Thursday 26 October 2023. The GiveOUT Board has issued the following Statement on the Referendum.
To First Nations communities, including our Brotherboys, Sistergirls and other LGBTQIA+ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, we stand with you today and every day. We commit to continue to fight and walk with you towards reconciliation, self-determination and justice.
Given the outcome of Saturday’s referendum, this week is not the time for a national celebration. We have listened to First Nations community leaders’ request for time to heal, reflect and regather strength. We have therefore decided that the GiveOUT Day campaign will be extended by one week and GiveOUT Day will now be held on Thursday 26 October 2023.
Donations via the GiveOUT Day website will remain open and we will update our Resource Hub content in line with this announcement. We understand the importance of GiveOUT Day for our LGBTQIA+ communities, particularly small organisations working at the intersections, and remain committed to working with you over the next two weeks to ensure this year’s GiveOUT Day will be more successful than ever.
We recognise the impact of the process leading up to and the outcome from Saturday’s referendum is extremely difficult. We must ensure First Nations community organisations have the resources they need to provide healing, support and advocacy for this next chapter.
We therefore invite you to donate to the First Nations-led organisations who are working directly with Brotherboys, Sistergirls and other LGBTQIA+ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, including:
GiveOUT exists to address systemic disadvantage across Australia, and to provide impacted communities the resources they need to drive their own solutions. GiveOUT will be in touch with participating organisations and champions with further information.
GiveOUT remains proud to support the Uluru Statement from the Heart and the associated reform to deliver a better future for First Nations people. Always was, and always will be Aboriginal land.
