Gayby Baby Daddy to premiere at Qtopia Sydney

Gayby-Baby-Daddy-Matt-YoungFrom the team that brought you Up Your Bum, No Babies, Qtopia Sydney presents the premiere of Gayby Baby Daddy at The Substation, as part of the Pride Fest Season from 21 – 23 June 2025.

When Matt Young (Graham’s Dad from Gayby Baby) became a parent, he never imagined that his family would become part of Australian gay history. After decades of circuit parties, world travel, and opening nights, 33-year-old Matt traded in his fabulous gay lifestyle for “hetero-nomative” foster parenting.

18 years later, he looks back at the unbelievably true stories that made him who he is today, the adoptive father of two grown up young men. You can call him Daddy… because he actually is one.

This is the second collaboration from queer neuro-diverse director Dan Graham, and gay American-born actor Matt Young, written specifically for Qtopia Sydney.

Gayby Baby Daddy is a unique one-man memoir show, in the style of last year’s hit show Up Your Bum, No Babies,” says Matt Young. “It’s comic storytelling, based around my unbelievably true stories about same-sex parenting.”

“I want the audience to be entertained, but also there will be tender and heartfelt moments amongst the smiles and giggles. It’s a lot more free than the stand-up structure, allowing me to throw in some singing, some audience participation in a “pub-quiz” style, and a few unexpected surprises.”

In addition to Gayby Baby Daddy, Matt Young will bring his popular Queering the Script – an acting workshop for the LGBTQIA+ community to QTOPIA’s Workshop Hub on on Tuesday 24 June 2025.

Matt Young (performer/writer/creator) is a US born, Australian LGBTQIA+ actor living in regional Queensland, who can currently be seen in First Nation filmmaker David Cook’s feature film Heart of the Man on SBS on Demand. He is best known as Graham’s Dad in the documentary Gayby Baby, as James Cook in ABC TV’s Captain Cook: Obsession and Discovery, and as an original Australian cast member of The Producers (the Mel Brooks musical).

Dan Graham (director) Dan Graham is a Theatre Director and a Disability Advocate who has worked with Bell Shakespeare, Sydney Festival, Sydney Fringe, Antipode Theatre Company, and the Ensemble Theatre. Recent US collaborations include the Atlantic Theatre Company and Pasadena Playhouse, as well as the UK’s Globe Theatre. He has recently been granted Churchill and ISPA Fellowships.
