Divisi Chamber Singers – a love is a love is a love

Midsumma-2024-Divisi-Chamber-SingersJoin Divisi Chamber Singers as they continue to break barriers and inspire in this celebration of queer voices and perspectives, as they present a love is a love is a love, at the Melbourne Recital Centre, as part of the 2024 Midsumma Festival, on Saturday 3 February.

Divisi continues to amplify the voices of local LGBTQIA+ artists as they present a vibrant program of works by acclaimed Australian queer composers, Meta Cohen, Sally Whitwell and Connor D’Netto.

Meta Cohen’s cycle of queer love songs, a love is a love is a love is one of the 2021 winners of an ABC Composer Commissioning Award. Based upon poetry by Australian queer writers, this has been recorded and released by the ABC and covers a diverse array of perspectives.

Sally Whitwell’s Spectrum is a multi-movement work that represents different colours of the rainbow and varying shades of queer experience.

In a world premiere, Connor d’Netto’s latest work draws from Bastian Fox Phelan’s moving narrative Stove Photography, as featured in the award-winning podcast Queerstories by Maeve Marsden.

These three major new works will brought to life by the remarkable Divisi Chamber Singers, Alex Gorbatov, Bailey Montgomerie, Alex Ritter, Anish Nair, Marjorie Butcher and Monika Harris – who will be joined by pianist Coady Green.

Divisi Chamber Singers is a youth-led not-for-profit organisation that supports early-career creative artists. Through commissioning and performing innovative works and projects, Divisi strives to break down established norms of classical music.

Their ground-breaking debut album, Spectrum, stands as a testament to their unwavering dedication, being the first classical record in Australian history exclusively devoted to LGBTQIA+ composers.

“A love letter to queerness and the LGBTQIA+ community.” – Meta Cohen
