After a sold-out debut season in Melbourne, comedian Anna Piper Scott (Safe Home, SBS) brings her defiant and controversial original play, An Evening With JK, to Adelaide Fringe this March.
This sharp satire has turned heads for its audacious casting; the proudly transgender Piper Scott plays “JK” – a Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminist (TERF).
Parodying the likes of JK Rowling, the fictional JK attends a literary interview to promote her new book only to find herself in a battle of wits against plucky interviewer, trans woman, and former fan, Matilda Quinn – portrayed by actress Sasha Chong (Romeo Is Not The Only Fruit).
Cornered in front of a live audience, JK is forced to answer the tough questions she’s never asked and take a harsh look at the TERF movement – what it stands for, and how a figure like JK may end up consumed by its rhetoric.
Directing this combative new work is Green Room Award winner and non-binary artist, Margot Morales (in the likely event of forever), along with dramaturgy from non-binary writer, Amy May Nunn (Lemon Tree on Dreg Street).
“After years of performing stand-up comedy, I’m so excited to branch out into theatre,” explains Anna Piper Scott. “Especially with a show like this.”
“I know the very concept of the show is bound to upset some people, on both the left and the right. But I think those brave enough to come along will see that this is more than just a stunt.”
An Evening With JK is a daring, political and deeply satirical work that’s certain to mark Anna Piper Scott as one-to-watch on the Australian theatrical scene. With transgender rights being constantly debated in the media,
“I think it’s important that trans creatives get to have a voice about our own stories,” says Piper Scott. “And I really wanted to delve in on why a certain controversial author is considered such a big threat to trans rights and explore that idea of separating the art from the artist.”
