Line is a powerful tool in its ability to communicate division and otherness: when one sees a person drawing a single line on a white piece of paper, one interprets this act as the establishment of two sides in opposition, each being each other’s ‘other’.’
The artist has used this quality of line in this work as a mechanism to describe his experience of identity engagement as a gay, male Australian of Slovenian descent.
The imagery in this drawing refers to traditional Slovenian folk creatures (the Kurent, who is characterised by a long tongue with horns and a hay adornment), traditional Slovenian textile patterns and Australian flora (kangaroo paw, eucalyptus flowers and leaves).
